The Pony Express rode again in this revisionist and PC western. The year was 1860, the place a prairie station near Sweetwater on the Central Overland Express line, which stretched 2,000 miles from St. Joseph to Sacramento. Grizzled, understanding old teaspoon Hunter (Anthony Zerbe) was the station master, while his young riders were a mix of races, sexes, and famous-names-to-be: crack shot Jimmy "Wild Bill" Hickok (Josh Brolin); William "Billy" Cody (Stephen Baldwin), the future Buffalo Bill; handsome Kid (Ty Miller), no other name; bald, mute Ike McSwain (Travis Fine); half-Kiowa Little Buck Cross (Gregg Rainwater); and cross-dresser Lou McCloud (Yvonne Suhor), who dressed like a boy to be a rider, too; freeborn black Noah Dixon (Don Franklin); and 14 year old Jesse James (Christopher Pettiet), who helped out around the station. Also in the cast were first Emma Shannon (Melissa Leo), then Rachel Dunn (Clare Wren), who looked out after the boys. Emma met, fell in love with and married Marshal Sam Cain (Brett Cullen).
Aired 1989-1992 on ABC.
